  • Shocking figures reveal there are 3000 honour attacks a year in the UK
Dec 4 2011 By Derek Alexander
ALMOST 3000 people were victims of so-called Muslim honour attacks in the United Kingdom last year.
Statistics obtained by a charity revealed that there were at least 2823 violent honour-related incidents investigated by police in England and Wales.
It is believed that offences in Scotland and Northern Ireland would take the total through 3000.
Women and girls who have been accused of bringing shame on their family or community are usually attacked by male relatives. Punishments include kidnappings, beatings and murder.
The data was obtained from 39 of Britain’s 52 police forces by the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation (IKWRO) under the Freedom of Information Act.
Eight forces recorded more than 100 attacks in 2010.
The Metropolitan Police had the highest number of recorded incidents with 495.
Only 12 forces were able to provide figures from 2009 ,which revealed there was a 47 per cent rise in honour attacks.
The charity yesterday said the figures did not provide the full picture but are the best national estimate.
IKWRO director Diana Nammi said: “The perpetrator will even be considered as a hero within the community because he is the one defending the family and community’s honour and reputation.
“For some cases, police and some organisations just help them up to a length of time, then stop. With honour-based violence, the threat may be a lifetime threat.
“The problem is that there is no systematic training for police, social services, teachers and midwives.”
A Home Office spokesman said: “We are determined to end honour violence and recognise the need for greater consistency on the ground to stop this indefensible practice.
“Our action plan to end violence against women and girls sets out our approach to raise awareness, enhance training for police and prosecutors and better support victims.”
Last month, Glasgow-based Saif Rehman, 31, and his wife Uzma Naurin, 30, were gunned down in an “honour killing” in Pakistan.
Uzma’s father Muzaffar Hussain, 58, fled to the US after the murders.
In December 2003, Dundee man Mohammad Arshad was jailed for seven years for trying to hire a hitman to kill the man his daughter had secretly married.

  • Police probe more ‘racist abuse’
Wednesday, 30 November 2011
Detectives are investigating video footage of another foul-mouthed commuter shouting racist abuse on a train.
The minute-and-a-half tirade by a brunette woman on a Manchester-London train was spotted by officers after it was posted on YouTube.
Footage entitled “My Tram Experience part 2” came to light after Emma West, 34, appeared in court over a separate web video allegedly showing passengers being abused.

Officers launched the latest hunt for a brunette woman caught shouting: “You are in my country now, talk my language.”
A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said inquiries indicate that the video may date back two years.
He said: “Anti-social behaviour like this is completely unacceptable and we would urge anyone who is the victim of such behaviour, or who witnesses it, to call police.
“It is important that incidents are reported either as they take place or, if that isn’t possible, as soon as possible afterwards as this allows us to respond and investigate quickly.”
West, of New Addington, was remanded in custody until December 6 after appearing at Croydon Magistrates’ Court in south London charged with a racially aggravated public order offence.
:: Potential witnesses are urged to contact British Transport Police free on 0800 40 50 40.

  • Mum attacked three cops after racist cab rampage
April 25, 2011
A care worker went berserk in a taxi – launching a racist tirade against the driver then assaulting three police officers.
Vicky Bedward, 28, punched and kicked two cops then spat in another’s face after her husband, Arron, threatened the cabbie, a court heard.
It took four officers to finally restrain her, a judge was told.
Police had been called after Mrs Bedward, who has a young son, racially abused the taxi driver in a drunken rage.
She also smashed the glass separating the passengers from the driver, causing £337 damage.
Mr Bedward, 29, a security worker and former marine, was also hauled before the courts for his part in the ‘disgraceful’ incident.
He swore at the victim and threatened to ‘smash his head in’ after disagreeing with the driver’s route through Salford Quays.
Both he and Mrs Bedward, a care assistant, have now lost their jobs as a result of the incident, a judge was told.
Mr Bedward was working in security for the UK Border Agency when the incident happened.
The defendants, of Brindle Heath Road, Pendleton, Salford, were both sentenced at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court after pleading guilty to offences relating to the incident.
Mr Bedward admitted a public order offence.
He did not assault anyone and his actions were not racially motivated, the judge heard.
Mrs Bedward pleaded guilty to racially aggravated criminal damage and assaulting three police officers.
The incident occurred at around 1.30am on Sunday, June 20 last year.
Adrian Farrow, prosecuting, said Mr Bedward threatened to attack the driver after disagreeing with the route, and when police arrived his wife assaulted three officers.
She punched an officer on the arm and kicked another in the shins, then spat at a third after she was arrested, the court heard.
Four officers were involved before she was ‘eventually subdued’, Mr Farrow said.
Lianne Birkett, defending Mrs Bedward, said her client could remember ‘very little’ about the attack because she was so drunk.
She lost her job after 10 years as a care assistant and had a young son to look after, Miss Birkett added.
Carolyn Smith, defending Mr Bedward, said her client showed ‘genuine, heartfelt remorse for his actions’ and had also lost his job at the UKBA.
Mr Bedward was given a 12-month conditional discharge.
His wife was given a 12-month community order, with 60 hours of unpaid work and six months’ supervision. She must also pay for the damage to the taxi.
Judge Adrian Smith told Mr Bedward: “You have had to deal with very difficult members of the public, and now you have been a very difficult member of the public yourself.
“You were both in the taxi and you behaved disgracefully.”

  • Racist attack on Sudanese victim in Harpurhey

A man has been beaten with a stick and a stone by a gang of six men in what police have described as a racially-motivated attack in Manchester.

The 21-year-old from Sudan was approached by two of the gang asking for a cigarette on Kesteven Road, Harpurhey, at 0400 BST on Saturday.

They subjected him to racist abuse and punched him and then were joined by four other men.

The victim was struck with a large stick and a stone that cut his head.

    ‘Extremely sad’

He was treated in hospital for a head wound that required stitches.

Police said a member of the public shouted at the attackers, causing them to run away.

Det Sgt Shagufta Khan said: “It is extremely sad that in this day and age people are motivated by racial hatred.

“Racism is something we all abhor and I want to stress we are doing all we can to find the culprits so they can be brought to justice for what they have done.

“Not only did they shout racist abuse, they took it further by using such a level of violence it is thankful the man did not suffer more serious injuries.

“The fact they were prepared to strike him in the head with a large stone shows not only are they racist but they are dangerous and we need to catch them.”

The two attackers who approached the victim asking for a cigarette are described as white and aged about 20.

One had dark short hair and was wearing a plain blue short-sleeved shirt and dark coloured shorts.

The other wore a white T-shirt and light coloured trousers.
